"As a Member of Congress, I have championed senior rights
and worked tirelessly to ensure that senior citizens receive the
care they need, have access to affordable, quality health care and
are provided with the retirement benefits they deserve. Our
seniors have lived through the Great Depression, fought for us in
World War II, carried us through the Cold War, built our great
economy, and most importantly, raised us. They deserve to live
with respect, dignity and care."
- Congressman Mike Honda
"In the 21st Century, the competition for jobs and for a
stake in the world marketplace will be won by the young people who
are best educated. In Silicon Valley, perhaps more than in any
other part of the country, we must commit ourselves to providing
our students with the very best education we can give them. They
will be counted on to drive the high-tech world further than we
have ever dreamed and they must be prepared."
- Congressman Mike Honda
"I've lived and worked in this district for nearly my
entire life. I've watched its remarkable transformation from
Blossom Valley to Silicon Valley. In that time, we have done
nothing less than change the way the world does business. With
this remarkable success comes great responsibility. We must
continue to grow and expand our new economy, and we must continue
to be leaders in the field of innovation. We must ensure that our
businesses are staffed by the most talented and skilled employees.
And we must ensure that our students learn the high-tech skills
they'll need to compete for jobs in the 21st Century."
- Congressman Mike Honda
"What could be more important to the families of Silicon
Valley than the health and well-being of their loved ones? As a
husband and a father of two, I know what it means to want the best
possible care for your family. Everyone should have access to
quality healthcare at affordable rates, no matter where they live,
how old they are, or what background they come from."
- Congressman Mike Honda
"To me the debate over what to do with the budget surplus
is simple. If you ask any working family in Silicon Valley what
they do when they have some extra money at the end of the month,
they'll tell you that they pay off their bills. It's common sense.
Likewise, the federal government should use its projected surplus
to pay the bills. By using the surplus to pay off the national
debt, we can save money on the interest we pay and ensure the
long-term solvency of Medicare and social security. With what's
left, we can offer targeted tax relief for working families who
really need it."
- Congressman Mike Honda
"As a father of two children and a former public school
teacher, I take the fight to keep guns off our streets and out of
our schools very personally. If the rash of gun violence we’ve
seen over the past several years has taught us anything, it’s
that we must keep firearms away from children and criminals. If we
want to make America a safer and healthier place, we must enact
and enforce strict laws to make this principle a reality. As the
Chair of the Assembly Public Safety Committee, I’ve been a
leader in the fight for gun safety. I’ll take that same
leadership to Congress."
- Congressman Mike Honda
"Protecting our open spaces and California’s sacred
wilderness is more than sound public policy- it's an obligation. I
also believe that environmental protection is more than preserving
the wilderness far away from communities. In Congress, I have
fought to protect our daily environment - our tap water, the air
that surrounds us, the parks and trails in populated areas, and
most importantly, I will continue fighting to ensure that new
schools are constructed in safe, non-polluted locations. I’m
proud of my sole endorsement by the League of Conservation Voters,
and I’m proud of my environmental record. I will continue
fighting for our natural treasurers."
- Congressman Mike Honda
"I am committed to protecting tribal sovereignty. In
Congress, I will keep fighting to ensure that the federal
government lives up to its historical and moral obligations and
its Trust Responsibility. Because my family was interned during
World War II, my commitment to defending the civil rights of all
Americans, particularly Native Americans and our nation's racial
minorities, transcends politics."
- Congressman Mike Honda
"During a JCRR leadership trip to the State of Israel, I
was able to more deeply understand the many compelling and complex
issues surrounding the relations between the U.S., Israel and her
neighbors. My trip, along with my experience of being interned as
a Japanese-American during the World War II, have enabled me to
develop an understanding of what it means to be persecuted on the
basis of one's heritage. The issues currently facing the State of
Israel must be addressed by the U.S. in order to maintain
democracy in the Middle East."
- Congressman Mike Honda
"Responsibilities come hand in hand with opportunity.
High-tech, high-wage jobs mean nothing if our daily commute is a
daily dose of gridlock. First, we need to bring BART to San Jose.
It just makes sense to do it now. Second, we need to construct
infrastructure that facilitates access to public transit,
including better roads, intermodal transit stations, and expanded
carpool rides. In Congress, as a member of the House
Transportation Committee, and the Subcommittee on Aviation,
Highways & Transit, I have worked to make real progress in these areas.
We have a shared responsibility to build better transportation
services for Silicon Valley's next generation."
