To me, the debate over what to do with the budget
surplus is simple. If you ask any working family in Silicon
Valley what they do when they have some extra money at the
end of the month, they'll tell you that they pay off their
bills. It's common sense. Likewise, the federal government
should use its projected surplus to pay the bills. By using
the surplus to pay off the national debt, we can save money
on the interest we pay and ensure the long-term solvency of
Medicare and social security. With what's left, we can offer
targeted tax relief for working families who really need
it.
